Welcome to Governance4governing. This blog is designed with you in mind– a board member of a non-profit organization. The names, board member or trustee, are often used interchangeably, so we do not distinguish between the two here. The important consideration is that you are now sitting on a board of a non-profit organization, and are not sure of what your responsibilities are exactly. You may or may not have had experience with non-profits before, or are just new to the organization. You may have had an orientation with the executive or chair of the organization, and are looking for more information.
Governance4 governing is a group of individuals who collectively have more than 70 years experience serving on various non-profit boards. We hope to provide you with useful information and timely issues to help you improve your role as a board member on behalf of the organization and community you serve. The site is interactive so that you may ask a question. At any given time, the press is covering a governance issues. The important part is what this means for you in your role of governing.
Our intent is to provide you with a forum for relevant information on your duty, research on governance practices, a discussion forum for your questions, and feedback from a team of advisors. Our commitment is to improve the quality of non-profit governance on behalf of the organizations, communities, and stakeholders these organizations serve. We will cover issues related to governance– decision-making, board structure, selection process, group-think, quality, strategic thinking, conflict of interest, fiduciary concerns, and other timely governance topics.We will also address characteristics of dysfunctional boards, as well as characteristics of well functioning effective boards. The information will be with you in mind, a member of the governing body, of an organization that has no oversight, or stockholders.
